Editorial Inspiration

NARSs editorial looks, don't differ too far from their advertisements looks. The only real difference being they have a  slightly stronger makeup look and tend to use more colours. This would be due to the fact that the advertisement campaigns are targeted to a certain range of makeup, what they're trying to sell at the minute. Here are a few examples of the editorial looks NARS create. The first two images are from Vogue Korea:

In regards to this whole shoot, I took a lot of inspiration from the David Koma AW16-17 show. This is in relations to makeup and clothing style of the shoot. Firstly, I saw the makeup from the back stage images on the NARS Cosmetics Facebook page, so I decided to have a look through and found these pictures:

The eyes are simple with just a half black eyeliner around the inner part of the eye, but I believe its so effective to make a look. For the second makeup look, I knew I wanted to use the blue eyeshadow colour from NARSs Spring 16 collection, so I mixed it with my M.A.C mixing medium and created this amazing blue eyeliner colour.

For the clothing, I thought about having something matching but not the same on each of my models. I found this picture, also on the NARS Cosmetic Facebook page from the same David Koma catwalk:

It really appealed to me, I liked how the models were effectively wearing the same thing but they weren't. I wanted to recreate this in my own shoot. Here is the moodboard that I made for this look. As they are both extremely similar, I've only made one moodboard for this, but you can see both of the looks on here:

Here are my two face charts for these looks:

Catwalk Inspiration

From looking through Vogue, I managed to find some of the catwalk shows that NARS have done the makeup for. I'd been struggling to find some, so this was like gold to me! Throughout every image, and like most catwalk images, the models face is emotionless, and they are mid walking. Below are the images from Vogue:

For this unit of catwalk, you could of created a 'behind the scenes' photo but I wanted to try to create my own catwalk and have the model look like she's either posing at the end or mid way walking. Obviously this is going to be difficult to create in a limited studio space. It'll probably take a few times but i think it'll end up working out well.

I did get some tips and help from the book, Vogue Beauty, on how to get flawless skin with the look of little makeup. This is the found this page:

For the two looks for catwalk, I knew I wanted them both to be completely different but also be similar to each other at the same time. I wanted to first image to be a strong over the top makeup look with big fashion eyebrows. This is the look that I created in my timed assessment, so I felt prepared to create and shoot this look. For the second look, I decided to take inspiration from Marc Jacobs/NARS catwalk of no makeup. Obviously no makeup never means no makeup, it tends to mean flawless skin. I do believe that Marc Jacobs/NARS catwalk show was done with very minimal to no makeup, but I want to create a beautiful image at the same time, and unfortunately, my model doesn't have the best skin.

I created two moodboards that include the makeup look, posing, hairstyling, the clothing, and the makeup products used. I wanted the first look to be a full makeup that a bit too much, but that's what catwalks are for, experimenting with different looks. My second makeup look is the complete opposite of my first. I wanted this one to have flawless skin and focus more on the models beauty than the makeup on top of it. However, my model didn't have the greatest skin so I did end up putting a lot of makeup on her face. Here are my two moodboards:

This is the face chart that I created for the full makeup look:

NARS Collaborations

NARS has worked with so many different makeup artist over the years. The NARS Cosmetics Facebook page actually displays all the information about previous catwalk shows from all over the world. I love how they've done this because, as a fan of the brand and products, it makes people feel closer to the brand. It makes it more realistic as it's giving it a personal feel compared to the high end fashion companies like Chanel and YSL.

The first picture and information I came across was for backstage at London Fashion Week AW14. The lead makeup artist was Val Garland, and it also gives you all the information about what she used on the face, eyes, brows, and lips. NARS was the show's make-up sponsor for this certain catwalk show (Vogue, 2014). Below are the screenshots and images that were on the NARS Facebook page.

The next backstage catwalk looks that I came across was from the London Fashion Week AW16, working with lead makeup artist, Mark Carrasquillo. Carrasquillo said in an interview to Buro247, "The look is all about honest, clean, perfect individualistic beauty. The collection definitely played a great role in inspiring it. There is a lot going on with textures, silhouettes, metallics and the likes, so we wanted to make the beauty look more about the girls, as they already look great in the clothes." (Buro 247, 2016)

This backstage look was created by Francois Nars for Marc Jacobs Fall 2016 catwalk. The set look for this show was 'Punk-Meets-Flapper'. Nars had an interview with WWD magazine saying, "It's all black - every single bit of it." He created six looks inspired by Eighties punk - ranging from a cat eye to an extremely smoky eye, finished with black lips. (WWD, 2016). The finger waves in the hair were created by hair stylist Guido Palau.

The final backstage catwalk look that I found on the NARS Facebook site was from New York Fashion Week 2016. The lead makeup artist was Mark Carrasquillo, who I looked at earlier. He had another interview about this look and gave his inspiration for it. " I was inspired by a young Hispanic girl in New York. She's really confident and likes herself - she doesn't entertain all the makeup tricks 'contour, foundation & powders' she goes straight for a strong lip. This is a sophisticated update on the heavily-lined lip from the 90s. I played with the colour and application on the lips, kept the rest of the face clean and bare, and brushed gloss through her brows to keep it young. It's beauty with attitude." (Blinging Beauty, 2016).
