Brand Evaluation

The brand that I chose for this unit was NARS Cosmetics by Francois Nars. I chose this brand because I liked the simplicity that it portrays. From the images that are produced to the packaging of the makeup products, its all got that simplistic feel to it.

What helped me to get the images that I did, was the research behind it all. Whether it was NARS, Vogue or Harper’s Bazaar, all the research helped me to get the final product from some other company. However, I did notice that NARS is a hard brand to get research for. Back at the beginning of the year on the NARS website, they had a video of their Spring 16 collection and an editorial video to go with it. Unfortunately, when I went to write and blog about this specific video on their website, it had been taken down - and what seemed to be – removed from the Internet. Taking all experiences from this, I now know to blog something I find straight away before it disappears.

I found this brand interesting because it does a lot of with in collaboration with other makeup artists and designers. Francois Nars seems to have a favourite too, Marc Jacobs. They’ve done so much work together that they could start their own brand together by now. I feel as though NARS doesn’t get enough credit for the brand it is, compared to the likes of Chanel and YLS.

The one thing about this brand that I found difficult to do was the catwalk. Due to NARS not having their own fashion clothesline, like Chanel, I needed to take inspiration from other brands and magazine brands to find something that fitted. I believe I came over this well but I just hope it still looks like a NARS image. This did mean that I was able to be a little more creative than what other students could have been because I didn’t have a strict brief and brand to follow. I could use my imagination to my advantage.

Overall, I’m pleased with the brand that I selected because even though they didn’t have a clothesline to follow, I managed to look at other brands and use them to work with my makeup looks. I did manage to take inspiration from Marc Jacobs for a few things and it still clearly look like a NARS image because they work closely together. I think if I were to do this again, I would pick another brand, and not NARS. This is due to it being difficult to find things out about them and what they’ve worked on as well as some campaigns. With it being hard to find these things, it meant that my research was lacking. I do believe I’ve found a lot out about NARS even though they don’t have a lot of them.

Project Evaluation

This project has been all about the world of fashion and how it’s portrayed to us, the public. We’ve focused on catwalk, editorial, and advertisements that have been created by our chosen brands, and had to create our own ones. This unit has been interesting but it’s also been difficult at the same time.

I’ve always been interested in magazines and flicking through to see what people and brands have created. But, I never knew how much work went in to each image and how much time was spent on it. I think I spent 6 hours one day, editing just one image! It took it out of me!

Overall, I've had a very stressful time with this unit. The unit itself has been good, and the images that I’ve produced have made this my favourite unit, under wig that it. However, I don’t feel like my blog is as good as what it could be. This unit conflicted with our Contextual Studies unit so it meant that I had to put that first above this unit. When talking with Kat and noticing my issues in the presentation, she told me that I need to multitask better. However, I struggle with writing and know it isn’t my strong point, so if I didn’t focus on the other unit, I would have failed that.

Even though I have come out with some amazing images, I do just think in the back of my head that I could of done better. I never really put my blog first, but this time I have wanted to do well on it, I just feel as though I haven’t had enough time due to also completing a big unit at the same time. After finishing this all now, I can't decide on whether I enjoyed this unit or not. I believe I did but I just wish we had more time.

My Final Seven Images - Edited

These images are my selected seven, after editing. I'm so pleased and happy with the outcome of my images and then with the editing on top. I'm most proud of the final image, the one model Harper's Bazaar magazine front cover. I feel as though it's one of the best images I've produced.

Harper's Bazaar Front Covers

While looking through all the Bazaar magazines that are available at our university library. I found these three that caught my eye. When trying to create my own magazine front cover, I got stuck between two images. One had a model central, and the other had two model next to each other. From looking through every front cover from 2007-2016, there was only one front cover with more than just one model on it. It's the August 2014 edition, talking about Downton Abbey women. I love the look of this front cover but my image didn't have as much background space as this does so I wasn't able to fit much writing in. Below is the August 2014 edition front cover:

I then went on to find these two magazine front covers, August 2013 & September 2013. The first magazine appeals to me because I like how to model is central and over lapping the writing title. The second I loved because it looked just like one of my pictures I captured of my model Sian. This image gave me the inspiration to create the final Haper's Bazaar magazine front cover with just one model.

My Seven Chosen Images - Before Editing

Here are the seven images that I have chosen to be selected for editing and using as each sub-section pictures. I'm very proud of these pictures because the models look stunning, the poses are amazing, and I believe the backgrounds work so well with each individual picture.

Editorial Photoshoot

My editorial photoshoot consisted of two models. This was actually the first time that I did a photoshoot with more than one model in the frame at one time. It was a bit trickier than shooting with just one person as you need to take a whole other person into consideration to make the image look the best as possible. My this photoshoot, I used Jasmine Collins & Sian Davey:

I wanted to use two people for this shoot as I think it looks more editorial, you tend to see more than one person in editorial magazine images than not. My plan was always to have Sian as a model, but I was supposed to have another model with shoulder length ginger hair and pale skin. However, due to circumstances, my other model could no longer be involved, so I had to pick another model, Jasmine. I've used Jasmine a number of times for other photoshoots. She has amazing skin, and is a model herself, once she steps in front of that camera, she's ready to go! However, like Naomi, Sian hadn't modelled before. Luckily for me, I did has Jasmine there so she helped Sian out and directed her on how to pose. Like Jasmine though, Sian has flawless skin and is amazing to capture of camera.

Like the advert photoshoot, I wanted to stick to the NARS SS16 collection. This included a slightly strong blush on the cheeks, a subtle eyebrow, and a strong half lid eyeliner.

Here are the image from the shoot for my editorial looks:

I believe that this is one of the best photoshoots I've ever done. The images came out clear and crisp, the make-up is exactly how I wanted it to come out, and the poses and models really make these images what they are. As the two models didn't know each other, all the first section of images look a bit stiff and cardboard like, however, once we started playing some music, and having a bit of a laugh, everyones nerves calmed a bit and that really reflects in my images shown.

The background I created for this photoshoot was done using gel lighting. For the first shoot, I used a black background sheet, and placed a light behind my model facing the wall. I used a blue sheet of plastic to create the colour that appears on the background. I love how it turned out because its striking and stands out. I love how it also outlines the models, giving them a glow. The second photoshoot, I used a pink background, still with the blue gel lighting. This made it create a purple colour which is lovely. I wanted to use brighter colours for this shoot because theres more colour used in the makeup compared to the one before. So I believe they correspond well together.

Overall, I'm so so happy with this outcome of all the pictures from this photoshoot. It was very hard to narrow it down to just pick a few. Although we are meant to only have two images pre category, I have selected three for my editorial because I truly can't chose out of these three.
