The brand that I chose for this unit was NARS Cosmetics by Francois Nars. I chose this brand because I liked the simplicity that it portrays. From the images that are produced to the packaging of the makeup products, its all got that simplistic feel to it.
What helped me to get the images that I did, was the research behind it all. Whether it was NARS, Vogue or Harper’s Bazaar, all the research helped me to get the final product from some other company. However, I did notice that NARS is a hard brand to get research for. Back at the beginning of the year on the NARS website, they had a video of their Spring 16 collection and an editorial video to go with it. Unfortunately, when I went to write and blog about this specific video on their website, it had been taken down - and what seemed to be – removed from the Internet. Taking all experiences from this, I now know to blog something I find straight away before it disappears.
I found this brand interesting because it does a lot of with in collaboration with other makeup artists and designers. Francois Nars seems to have a favourite too, Marc Jacobs. They’ve done so much work together that they could start their own brand together by now. I feel as though NARS doesn’t get enough credit for the brand it is, compared to the likes of Chanel and YLS.
The one thing about this brand that I found difficult to do was the catwalk. Due to NARS not having their own fashion clothesline, like Chanel, I needed to take inspiration from other brands and magazine brands to find something that fitted. I believe I came over this well but I just hope it still looks like a NARS image. This did mean that I was able to be a little more creative than what other students could have been because I didn’t have a strict brief and brand to follow. I could use my imagination to my advantage.
Overall, I’m pleased with the brand that I selected because even though they didn’t have a clothesline to follow, I managed to look at other brands and use them to work with my makeup looks. I did manage to take inspiration from Marc Jacobs for a few things and it still clearly look like a NARS image because they work closely together. I think if I were to do this again, I would pick another brand, and not NARS. This is due to it being difficult to find things out about them and what they’ve worked on as well as some campaigns. With it being hard to find these things, it meant that my research was lacking. I do believe I’ve found a lot out about NARS even though they don’t have a lot of them.
