Introduction & Brief

      This unit aims to develop the students understanding of how make-up and hair design concepts for fashion and beauty are developed from idea conception through to realisation. Emphasis will be placed on the research and development of ideas and will engage students in a deeper understanding of the practical and theoretical approaches required to produce innovative visual outcomes. Students will be expected to build on existing technical skills and theoretical knowledge from Level 4, producing work to a professional standard for an identified fashion and/or beauty market. 

      Through an employability-focused approach, students will be also introduced to the diverse roles of the make-up and hair artist/designer across editorial, advertising and fashion areas. The unit, with particular emphasis on the timed assessment, will encourage students to develop key transferable skills in communication, collaboration and negotiation. 

Areas of Study;

Student will focus on the following areas;

  • The role of the photographer, stylist, fashion designer, make-up and hair designer in relation to the rest of a creative team, and in commercial and creative contexts
  • The development of an idea from initial concept to final execution; research techniques and sources 
  • Organisational aspects of working with a make-up and hair design team
  • The relationship between lighting, post production, make-up and hair design and styling; how they complement or restrict one another
  • Construction and editing of images for fashion and beauty industry
  • The presentation of ideas through verbal and visual media
  • Giving appropriate critical feedback
